Fibromyalgia

How CBD can help alleviate the symptoms of FMS…

As stated on the NHS website ‘Fibromyalgia is a long term condition that cause pain all over the body’. Symptoms of FMS (Fibromyalgia Syndrome) can be:

An ache
A burning sensation
A sharp, stabbing pain
Stiffness
Fatigue
Cognitive abilities
Sleeping problems
Dizziness
Restless legs

The above is not a full list of symptoms but they are some of the most common fibromyalgia sufferers complain of.

As both medical and scientific communities acknowledge that the cause of fibromyalgia is still unknown they both lean towards physical traumas and genes as possible fibromyalgia-causing-culprits. Whatever the actual cause everybody agrees the symptoms are painful, uncomfortable and life interfering.

There main medical treatments offered for FMS are a range of antidepressants - SNRI’s and SSRI’s. Although these antidepressants can alleviate some symptoms in some FMS sufferers the side effects of these drugs are not great; such as feeling suppression.

Don't despair - there is a new miracle fibromyalgia aid…

CBD (Cannabidiol) has been found to have a massive positive effect on fibromyalgia symptoms. In fact fibromyalgia patients have reported that CBD has a ‘massive effect on chronic pain, sleeplessness, endurance, anxiety, depression, inflammation, muscle spasms, overall mental health and well-being’. In fact 78% of fibromyalgia suffers reported there pain had decreased.

Endocannabinoid System and Mitochondria

The reason CBD offers so much pain relief for FMS patients, as well as alleviating most of the uncomfortable symptoms such as loss of sleep, could be because CBD acts on both the Endocannabinoid System and also the life giving mitochondria. Both of these, (when deficient), have been linked with possible causes for fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia and the Endocannabinoid System…

Dr Ethan Russo MD Medical Director of PHYTECS believes that fibromyalgia is caused by a deficiency in the Endocannabinoid System which he has termed ‘ Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency (CES). He believes the reason CBD is so successful with treating fibromyalgia is that CBD supplements the Endocannabinoid system’s reducing its deficiency.

Fibromyalgia and Mitochondria…

Some of the medical community believe that fibromyalgia is a symptom of Mitochondrial Disorder. Significant reductions in mitochondrial enzyme activity (in complexes I, II, III and IV) were found in the fibromyalgia patients but not the healthy controls. That in combination with reduced levels of mitochondrial proteins indicated that mitochondrial functioning was indeed significantly reduced. So were CoQ10 and ATP levels and mitochondrial DNA levels. In fact, every aspect of mitochondrial functioning tested was found to have taken a significant hit in the fibromyalgia patients.

In 2012 a study found cannabidiol receptors on the membranes of mitochondria and a large amount of scientific data has confirmed that cannabidiol (CBD) can affect the mitochondria both directly and indirectly. A further, and more recent study, by Andrew Bilkei-Gorzo at the Institute of Molecular Psychiatry at the University of Bonn in Germany shows that the activation of the brain’s cannabidiol system naturally or by using CBD can help to remove damaged cells and improve the efficiency in mitochondria.
