Multiple Sclerosis & CBD

CBD (Cannabidiol) improves multiple sclerosis spasticity symptoms and sleep problems…

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a condition that affects the brain and/or spinal cord. It is an unpredictable neurological disorder that can range from benign and disabling to devastating. MS affects patients differently, some may experience mild symptoms such as fatigue or bladder problems while other may lose their ability to write, speak or walk.

MS symptoms often start between ages 20 and 40 and most people have attacks, also called relapses, when the condition gets noticeably worse. They’re usually followed by times of recovery when symptoms improve. For other people, the disease continues to get worse over time.

The main symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) include:

Difficulty walking
Vision problems, such as blurred vision
Problems controlling the bladder
Numbness or tingling in different parts of the body
Muscle stiffness and spasms
Problems with balance and coordination
Problems with thinking, learning and planning

MS sufferers recommend CBD as a treatment…

Though there are various forms of treatment available for multiple sclerosis patients one that individual MS sufferers recommend is CBD (Cannabidiol). Some MS patients state that using CBD has helped them with the neuropathic pain, bladder control, sleeping better and a reduction in muscle spasms. In fact CBD has become so popular because of its medicinal benefits in regards to MS that the Multiple Sclerosis Trust has created a section on its online platform solely for CBD information where it states:

“...Cannabidiol based medicines could improve patient-reported spasticity symptoms. They also concluded there was some evidence that cannabinoids may help improve short-term sleep in people with some conditions, including chronic pain and MS…” The Multiple Sclerosis Trust

CBD protects against MS inflammation

Cannabidiol provides long-lasting protection against the deleterious effects of inflammation in a viral model of multiple sclerosis

A recent study showed that demonstrate that CBD decreases the transmigration of blood leukocytes by down regulating the expression of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), chemokines (CCL2 and CCL5) and the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1β, as well as by attenuating the activation of microglia. Moreover, CBD administration at the time of viral infection exerts long-lasting effects, ameliorating motor deficits in the chronic phase of the disease in conjunction with reduced microglial activation and pro-inflammatory cytokine production. Another study has shown that using CBD (Cannabidiol) may counteract the development of multiple sclerosis (MS), by targeting the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway, the study also showed that CBD is also a viable treatment is due to its ability to reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines.
